The Els Club is Ernie Els's first solo design, opened in Dubai Sports City in 2008 and running to 7,538 yards from the tips. Els borrowed openly from the courses he admires — sandy waste areas and ragged bunker edges in the Royal Melbourne manner, closely mown run-offs around firm greens in the spirit of Pinehurst No. 2 — and the result is a course where the ground game matters more than anywhere else in the UAE. The stretch known as the Lion's Den is where good rounds go to be tested.
